While assisting a client with Washington State’s unclaimed property search, I decided to check for myself. To my surprise, I found funds I never knew were owed to me. A refund from my 2020 mortgage refinance had been turned over to the state and sat there unnoticed for five years.
If it can happen to me, it can certainly happen to anyone. That is why I am sharing several trusted resources below to help you search for unclaimed funds, old 401(k) accounts, or even long-forgotten insurance policies.
Below are three reliable resources you can use to search for and claim funds that may belong to you:
1. Old 401(k) Accounts
The U.S. Department of Labor offers a tool to help locate forgotten retirement accounts from previous employers.

The Washington State Department of Revenue maintains a searchable database for unclaimed funds such as bank accounts, utility deposits, or stock dividends.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) provides a secure tool to search for life insurance policies and annuity contracts.
